Retrofit & Upgradation

Bring ageing tonnage into compliance and extend its trading life.

Regulation rarely stands still, and neither does the commercial pressure to cut fuel and emissions. Retrofitting lets owners protect the value of existing tonnage instead of writing it off, upgrading propulsion, navigation, safety and energy systems to meet current rules and run more efficiently. ShipSmith manages retrofit projects from feasibility through commissioning, handling engineering, class approval of the modification, procurement and installation. Whether the driver is an EEXI/CII shortfall, a ballast water or scrubber installation, or a bridge electronics refresh, we deliver the change without disrupting the vessel’s trading pattern any more than necessary.

Scope

What's included

What a Retrofit & Upgradation engagement with ShipSmith covers.

  • Energy-efficiency upgrades - propeller and bulbous-bow modifications, PBCF, shaft generators, LED and pump optimisation
  • Environmental compliance retrofits - ballast water treatment, exhaust scrubbers, EEXI/CII engine power limitation
  • Navigation and bridge electronics modernisation, including ECDIS and integrated bridge upgrades
  • Safety-system upgrades to current SOLAS/LSA/FFA standards
  • Engineering drawings and modification packages submitted for class and flag approval
  • Turnkey installation, commissioning and crew familiarisation
How it works

A clear, four-step path

One accountable partner from first assessment to documented handover.

  1. Feasibility

We assess the vessel, the regulatory driver and the payback case, then recommend the most cost-effective option.

  2. Design & approval

Modification drawings and calculations are prepared and submitted to class and flag for approval.

  3. Install & commission

Installation is scheduled around trading or a planned dock window, then commissioned and performance-verified.

  4. Certify & hand over

Class and flag sign off the modification, the crew are familiarised on the new system, and the as-built drawings and approval evidence are handed to the technical file.
