Engine Overhaul

Restore power, reliability and running hours to vessel machinery.

Main and auxiliary engines are the heart of the vessel, and the cost of an unplanned failure at sea dwarfs the cost of a disciplined overhaul. ShipSmith carries out scheduled and condition-based overhauls of two- and four-stroke diesels, generators and associated machinery, restoring rated performance and resetting the maintenance clock. Our fitters work to OEM manuals and clearances, measuring and recording every critical dimension so the engine is handed back not just running, but documented against specification. From a single unit decarbonisation to a full top- and bottom-end rebuild, the work is planned to minimise off-hire and supported by genuine or OEM-equivalent spares.

Scope

What's included

What a Engine Overhaul engagement with ShipSmith covers.

  • Top-end and bottom-end overhauls of two-stroke and four-stroke main and auxiliary engines
  • Cylinder unit decarbonisation, piston, liner, ring and bearing renewal
  • Crankshaft deflection, bearing clearance and running-gear measurement to OEM limits
  • Turbocharger, fuel-injection, governor and cooling-system overhaul
  • Genuine, OEM-equivalent or refurbished spares sourced and delivered to suit the scope
  • Calibrated measurement records, clearance sheets and a full overhaul report on completion
How it works

A clear, four-step path

One accountable partner from first assessment to documented handover.

  1. Plan & spares

We confirm scope from running hours and condition data, then stage the gaskets, seals and wear parts required.

  2. Strip & measure

Units are opened, cleaned and measured against OEM clearances, with all readings recorded.

  3. Rebuild & test

Components are renewed or refurbished, reassembled to spec, then run up and load-tested before handover.

  4. Document & reset the clock

Calibrated clearance sheets and a full overhaul report are handed to the chief engineer, with the maintenance interval reset against the work done.
